Transformers: Armada, World of The Mini-Cons:

While the Transformers saga originally started in 1984, running all the way up until 1994, the storyline of the heroic Optimus Prime and his Autobots continued to thrive here and abroad in Japan, even in comic book form. After the franchise began to see a drop in familiarity in 2002 the next spin off Transformers series was launched, known as The Unicron Trilogy.

The Beginning of the Mini-Cons –

Most of the standard elements of the Transformers story have not changed all that much since the original 1980s kid’s cartoon. The Autobots are still led by Optimus Prime and still battle the malicious Decepticons led by Megatron.

The majority of the different sequels to Transformers which have sprung up over the years seem to answer the doubts of hardcore fans, rather than add any new elements to the franchise.

But the start of the Unicron trilogy, you could say, is one expansion of Transformers that actually adds to the story’s substance. Transformers: Armada introduced the Mini-cons into the Transformers universe.

Mini-cons could be thought of as human-sized mini robots (compared to towering transformers like Megatron and Optimus Prime) caught in the middle of a war between the forces of good and forces of bad.

The Armada Optimus Prime and his Autobots aimed to co-exist and partner with the Mini-cons, but of course, Megatron and the Decepticons sought to enslave all Mini-cons in order to use their unique power up abilities, according to the Transformers: Armada storyline.

Armada’s Production Troubles –

The makers of Transformers: Armada originally aimed to release the show to Japanese and American audiences. Technical difficulties and a short production window forced the show, in essence, to come out of the oven before it was ready like an undercooked cake.

If you have seen the American version of Transformers: Armada, you can easily tell something definitely was lost in translation. The voice dubbed Armada Optimus Prime looked, felt and seemed out of place from what most Transformers fans were used to, but the added elements to the storyline and the continuing war between good and evil was enough for plenty of fans.

Armada Merchandising –

Transformers: Armada spawned a whole new line of children’s toys and other merchandise for the franchise – same feel for the most part, slightly different look. The essence of the Transformers appeal stayed the same.

Take the Optimus Prime action figure for example. Developers of Transformers: Armada were keenly aware that one of the biggest attractions of Transformers was the idea of different robots combining and morphing into even larger robots with bigger, better powers.

In order to boost his fighting power, the Armada Optimus Prime teamed up with the Mini-Con Sparkplug, as did many of the other merchandise in the Transformers: Armada series. The children’s toys are recommended for ages five and up. Often it was the case that a couple of different combinations of Mini-cons, Autobots and Decepticons were capable of joining together, forming unique robots of their own.
